building for Primary Health Care Center
As our first project, we are erecting a permanent building
for a primary health care center in Iyankankulam, Mullaitivu
district at a cost of about US $42,500. The cost includes
solar panels, too.
About Iyankankulam: 734
families, population 3057. Most people undertake coolie
work. They have been multiply displaced and are very poor.
Thunakai Central Dispensary is 15 km and Mallavi Rural Hospital
is 20 km. There is no bus route to the village most people
use bicycles to travel any distance. During the rainy season
flooding occurs and for 2-3 weeks there is no access to
the village. The current primary health care center is basically
functioning from a temporary house so developing this center
will be of great benefit to this area.
The center will be made up of following areas:
1. Waiting area
2. Office
3. Examination rooms x 2
4. Dispensary
5. Ward with in-patient beds
6. Procedure or labor room
7. Toilet/Bathroom
8. Staff residence
